Honoring Women’s Strength and Resilience: Del Carmen Celebrates International Women’s Month

On March 12, in the heart of Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte, a remarkable celebration unfolded as the

municipality proudly marked International Women’s Month. This year’s event carried profound

significance as it brought together local leaders, organizations, and community members to recognize

and elevate the vital role of women in driving sustainable development, particularly in the sectors of

farming and fishing.

Spearheaded by the dedicated leadership of Mayor Alfredo M. Coro II, the event was made possible

through the collaboration of UN Women, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources

(DENR), and the dynamic women food producers of AGREA. It served not only as a commemoration but

also as a call to action—highlighting the importance of empowering women as key contributors to food

security, environmental stewardship, and economic resilience.

A key highlight of the celebration was the launch of the Women’s Center, a transformative initiative

designed to provide a safe, inclusive space for learning, empowerment, and opportunity creation. The

center stands as a beacon of hope and progress, offering women in farming and fishing the tools,

knowledge, and resources they need to thrive. It is envisioned as a hub where women can enhance their

leadership capacities, develop their skills, and strengthen their contributions to their communities and

beyond.

Another poignant moment was the unveiling of the mural titled “Para sa Baji”. Vibrant and inspiring, the

artwork pays homage to the strength, perseverance, and unwavering spirit of Del Carmen’s women.

More than just a mural, it symbolizes the essential role of women in advancing the Sustainable

Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Zero Hunger, Climate Action, and Gender Equality. It stands as a

visual reminder that the path to a sustainable, equitable future is paved by empowering women and

acknowledging their indispensable role in society.

The celebration culminated with a Solidarity Parade, where participants marched in unity, honoring the

hardworking hands that nourish and sustain the community. It was a moment to reflect on the powerful

message at the heart of the event: When we invest in women, we invest in the future. A future that is

more just, more sustainable, and filled with promise.

As Del Carmen continues to champion the cause of women’s empowerment, the March 12 celebration

serves as a testament to what is possible when communities come together to uplift and recognize

women’s contributions to social progress and environmental sustainability.
